Senegal and Cape Verde through to final stage of Women's World Champs qualifier
Praia, Cape Verde, November 11, 2013 - Senegal and Cape Verde advanced to the final stage of African qualifiers for the 2014 Women's World Championship.
Both teams claimed tickets to the final qualification round after they came first and second respectively in zone 2 (Pool N) qualification tournament held in Pavilhão Desportivo in Praia, Cape Verde from November 8 to 10, 2013.
Senegal won both of their matches in the three nation tournament over Gambia 3-0 (25-8, 25-5, 25-15) and over Cape Verde in the final match 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-17) to lead with a win-loss ratio of 2-0 (6 points).
Cape Verde claimed the silver medal after beating Gambia 3-1 (25-27, 25-17, 25-14, 25-14) to finish second with 1-1 record (3 points). Gambia finished third with 0-2.
Senegal and Cape Verde will now proceed to the final qualification round where both will be drawn in Pool 2 along with Kenya, Seychelles, Uganda, Tunisia and Mozambique.
The format of the African qualification indicates that the top two teams from zone 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 will join zone 1 and 7 champions in the final phase. The 12 teams will be joined by the top two African teams in the FIVB Ranking (Kenya and Algeria) for a total of 14 teams to be divided into two final pools. The champions of each pool will secure their tickets to the 2014 FIVB Women's World Championship in Italy.
