Wildcards Dominican Republic ready to seize Women's Grand Champions Cup opportunity
Kobe, Japan, November 10, 2013 - After winning their first-ever FIVB medal at the 2009 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Champions Cup, the Dominican Republic women are back as wildcards this year, where will try to excel in the opportunity to win again.
Coming off of an excellent start of the 2013 season - finishing third at the Montreux Volley Masters and second in the NORCECA Continental Championships - the Dominican Republic women are looking for their first Grand Champions Cup medal since 2009, when they won bronze.
The Dominicans booked their ticket to the quadrennial event as the world best-ranked continental vice champions with the highest ranking at the last Olympic Games among non-qualfied teams.
The 14-roster team arrived in Japan on Nov. 2 and have been training at Osaka’s Torray Arrows Club.
The Dominican Republic will be the first to play in this year’s tournament, kicking off the premier event in a matchup against Thailand. After a travel day, the Dominicans meet Olympic champions and No. 1 ranked Brazil for their second match on Nov. 15 at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, to conclude the round-robin tournament with matches against hosts Japan (No. 3) and USA (No. 2).
