Pairs compete for place on Afghan National Beach Volleyball Team

The competition aims to select the four top talents for the National Beach Volleyball Team
Kabul, Afghanistan, November 5, 2013 - More than 30 beach volleyball teams have begun competing at a beach volleyball tournament in Kabul on Saturday, vying for a spot on the Afghanistan national beach volleyball team.

Eighteen teams from the capital and 15 from the provinces are participating in the five-day event, which was organized by the National Olympic Committee.

While the third-annual tournament is significant to the country’s national team, it does not offer any FIVB season ranking points.

On the first day of the tournament, a team from Kabul defeated Faryab 2-1, and Baghlan beat balk Balkh with the same result.

"The competition is aiming to select the four top talents for the National Beach Volleyball Team and we will begin training them for foreign competitions" said Arif Payman, Deputy Head of the Kabul Volleyball Federation.

Beach volleyball broke on to the athletics scene in Afghanistan, a country with no beaches, approximately four years ago.
