Meppelink and van Iersel excited about new partnership

After five years, which included two titles in 2011, with Sanne Keizer, Marleen van Iersel will team up with Madelein Meppelink in 2014 with their eyes on the World Championships in the Netherlands in 2015 and Rio 2016

Lausanne, Switzerland, October 23, 2013 - Dutch players Madelein Meppelink and Marleen van Iersel have announced that they will play together at the start of the 2014 international beach volleyball season.

For Van Iersel, Madelein Meppelink was a logical choice of partner after her former teammate Sanne Keizer, was forced to call it a day following a lingering tendonitis problem.

“With Sanne I had a fantastic time and I am grateful for all the beautiful moments we had together which included winning the European Championship title and two World Tours,” said Van Iersel. “I welcome the opportunity to form a new team with Madelein, who in my eyes, is one of the best blockers in the international field," she enthused.

For her part, Meppelink had formed a successful team with Sophie van Gestel earlier this year and the two had won the Corrientes Grand Slam in Argentina after just a few months of playing together. Their partnership came to an end when Sophie Van Gestel announced that she would be taking a break from competition.

Meppelink expressed her excitement about playing with van Irsel saying, “Marleen is a defender with lots of experience. The past five years she dominated the international beach volleyball with Sanne. She is very eager and she and I share a goal of competing in Rio. In addition, it will be cool to take part in the 2015 World Cup in the Netherlands and to go for it with the home crowd."
