Ninth team joins 2014 Women's Volleyball World Championship line up

Lausanne, Switzerland, October 21, 2013 – With their win at the 2014 Women's World Championship Qualification Tournament, Argentina have secured the second spot available to the South American Confederation (CSV) for the 2014 Women’s Volleyball World Championship in Italy.

Argentina joins Brazil – who took the first World Championship vacancy after winning the Women’s South American Championship in September – as the two South American contenders in the tournament.

The 2014 FIVB Volleyball World Championships - scheduled to take place from September 3 to 21 in Poland for the men and in Italy for the women from September 23 to October 12 -  will feature 24 teams in each competition. Currently 10 men's teams and nine women's have been confirmed for the competition next year.

To date only the South American and Asian (AVC) Confederations have completed their qualification tournaments for both the women’s and men’s World Championship tournament next year.

Earlier in October the European Confederation (CEV) held their second round of qualification tournaments, where Israel, Hungary and Switzerland moved to the final round of qualifiers in the women’s competition and The Netherlands, Ukraine, and Belarus in the men’s. The CEV final qualification round, which will be held in January 2014, will determine the six places still up for grabs in the men’s competition and the seven spots available for the women.

It was also a busy month for the African Confederation (CAVB), which also held its second round of qualifiers to determine the countries that will advance to the third and final stage of the qualification process in January.

The countries that have advanced to the third round of qualifications in the men’s competition to date are Botswana, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Egypt, Senegal, Seychelles, Tunisia and Zambia. While in the women’s competition Algeria, Egypt, Kenya, Seychelles, Tunisia and Uganda have moved through the final round of qualifiers at the beginning of next year.

The second round of CAVB qualification tournaments is set to continue in November. The final round will see 14 women’s teams play for the two CAVB places in the World Championship next year, while in the men’s competition 15 teams will be in contention for the three available spots.
