Lokomotiv vs Sada Cruzeiro for Men’s Club title

Sada Cruzeiro's Wallace Souza led the scoring charts and the big post game celebrations
Betim, Brazil, October 19, 2013 - For the first time in the nine editions of the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship, an Italian team won’t be in the finals as defending champions Trentino Diatec saw their streak of four titles in a row snapped by the Russia’s Lokomotiv Novosibirsk on Saturday.

More than 5,000 spectators watched Lokomotiv winning a competitive match of four sets against Trentino 25-27, 25-21, 26-24, 25-23 while cheered loudly as Brazil’s Sada Cruzeiro scored an impressive victory in straight sets (25-22, 25-18, 25-20) over Argentina’s UPCN to advance to the gold medal contest against the Russian club.

It will be the second consecutive visit of Sada Cruzeiro to the final of the championship as they lost to the Italian club last year in Doha, Qatar in the match for the world club supremacy. Trentino and UPCN will play for third place in the first match of Sunday.

Cuban Oreol Camejo was the best offensive player of Lokomotiv finishing with 17 points but he also became a big obstacle at the net with his five blocks. Pavel Moroz was next with 15 points, followed by Lukas Divis and Anton Astashenkov with 12 and 10, respectively.

Bulgarian Tsvetan Sokolov topped Trentino with a match-high 21 points, followed by Alexandre Ferreira with 15 tallies.

“We worked very well in all the fundaments of the game and the team was really focused,” Lokomotiv’s coach Andrey Voronkov said. “The players showed a lot of mental in the fourth set when we trailed by four points. The general reason for the victory was the stability of our team.”

Sada Cruzeiro blanked UPCN in the aces charts 7-0 and held a 5-2 margin in the blocking scores.

Wallace Souza and Cuban Yoandy Leal were the big guns for the local club. Souza recorded four aces and one block among his match-high 20 points, while Leal concluded with 12 points, including two aces and two blocks.

Theo Lopes, Alexandru Olteanu, Jose Santos and Martin Ramos, all finished with 9 points apiece for the UPCN team.

“We played so well,” Sada Cruzeiro’s Marcelo Mendez commented. “Our strong serves didn’t allow them to build their offence and that was the big difference.”
