Vizag Open removed from 2013 beach volleyball calendar

While Vizag has long been a hotbed of beach volleyball activity, having hosted several national events, the FIVB Beach Volleyball Open would have been its first international event

Lausanne, Switzerland, October 16, 2013 – With continued political unrest in India’s state of Andhra Pradesh, the promoters of the FIVB Beach Volleyball Open in Vizag have informed the FIVB of their decision to cancel the event scheduled for November 12 to 17.

The Vizag Open, originally planned to be held from September 4 to 8, was already postponed once to November on account of the political problems in the region. The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) had agreed to the postponement with an eye to ensuring the tournament would go ahead in order to give athletes greater opportunities to play in different parts of the world.

With the safety and security of players and international officials of paramount importance, the FIVB and the Indian Volleyball Federation have accepted the promoter’s decision to cancel November’s event however all parties will continue to work together in order to organise an event in Vizag in 2014.

The Vizag Open was one of four double-gender Open events scheduled for 2013 after Fuzhou (China) in April and Anapa (Russia) in August with Durban (South Africa) being the last event of the year from December 11 to 15. Starting in 2013, Grand Slams were clearly established as the core events of the FIVB World Tour while the number of Open events was expanded to give teams more opportunities and options to participate.

Following the cancellation of the Vizag Open, the next international beach volleyball event is the last Grand Slam of the year - the Xiamen Grand Slam, a double-gender event that will take place from October 22 to 27.

The Xiamen Grand Slam will be followed by the Phuket Open in Thailand from October 29 to November 3. The Durban Open will round off a very busy year for beach volleyball when South Africa plays host to the last event of the year from December 11 to 15.
