Men's U23 World Championship teams welcomed by Uberlandia authorities
Uberlandia, Brazil, October 10, 2013 - On the rest day scheduled for the FIVB Men's U23 World Championship, local authorities met with the FIVB and the twelve participating teams at a special ceremony held in Uberlandia.
The ceremony was headed by Uberlandia’s Mayor, Gilmar Machado, who was joined by authorities from the city and regional sport organisations including Zezinho Mendonca (General Director of FUTEL - Uberlandia Foundation for Tourism, Sports and Leisure) and Tomas Mendes (Vice-President of Minas Gerais Volleyball Federation).
Representing the FIVB Control Committee for the tournament were Rafael Lloreda Currea (Control Committee Director and South American Confederation President) and Marta Centeno de Sajche (Venue Operations Director).
Lloreda took the floor on behalf of President Dr. Ary Graça F° to thank the organisers for their work and to express President Graça’s immense satisfaction with Uberlandia’s appointment as host city for the landmark event. "Our President wasn't wrong when Uberlandia was appointed to host this World Championship,” said Lloreda. “The city has shown and provided us all of its benefits and facilities."
Lloreda also thanked the twelve teams, represented by their Team Managers, for their solidarity and support in the lead up to the event and for making the journey to Brazil.
In his closing speech, Mayor Machado thanked the FIVB for providing Uberlandia with the opportunity to show itself to the world through this World Championship and said that the local people are proud to be hosts of such an important international sporting event.
