Japan, China and USA remain undefeated at Women’s U23

 
Gina Mancuso scored 20 points to lead USA to a five-set victory over Germany in Pool B at Mexicali on Monday night
 
Tijuana and Mexicali, Mexico, October 7, 2013 – Japan edged the Dominican Republic in five sets (15-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-17, 15-9) to capture sole possession as the only undefeated team in Pool A at the FIVB Women’s U23 World Championship while in Pool B China and the United States kept their spotless mark after three days of actions.

United States had to fight hard before claiming a five-set victory over Germany (25-15, 23-25, 25-27, 25-12, 15-11), while China made a light work in beating Cuba in straight sets (25-14, 25-21, 25-23).

In the other matches in Pool A on Monday, Turkey dispatched Argentina in consecutive frames (25-20, 25-20, 25-19) and Italy outclassed Mexico 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-20). In Pool B, Brazil crushed Kenya 3-0 (25-8, 25-7, 25-10).

Yuri Nabeya and Saori Tahahashi led Japan with 20 and 14 points, respectively while Jeoselyna Rodriguez and Yonkaira Peña had 20 and 19 for the Dominican side.

“The objective of the game in defense is to keep the ball from landing and we just did that in the last part of the match,” Japan’s Shigekazu Okubo said.

Gina Mancuso scored 20 points while Sandra Adeleye had 10 to lead the United States. 

“It was a very nice effort by Germany,” USA’s coach Karch Kiraly said. “We made a lot of errors but we could improve in the fourth and fifth sets,”

Yanhan Lu scored 16 points for China while Xiaoya Zhang closed with 10. Rosanna Giel finished with 16 for Cuba.

“We had to work hard on our block and put some pressure because the last two sets they (Cuba) were very close,” China’s coach Xu Jiande stated.

On Tuesday, Argentina meet Japan, Dominican Republic clash with Italy and Turkey play against Mexico in Pool A in Tijuana. In Pool B in Mexicali, Cuba go against Kenya in a match between winless teams, United States battle with China for the top place and Germany take on Brazil.

The standings after three days are as follows:

Pool A: Japan 3-0 (7 points), Dominican Republic 2-1 (7), Turkey 2-1 (5), Italy 1-2 (5), Argentina 1-2 (3) and Mexico 0-3 (0). Pool B: China 3-0 (9), United States 3-0 (8), Brazil 2-1 (6), Germany 1-2 (4), Cuba 0-3 (0) and Kenya 0-3 (0).
