Sport Lisboa e Benfica v AJ Fonte Bastardo in Portugal Supercup

The Eagles have beaten AJ Fonte Bastardo 27 times in the 33 encounters between the two teams

Vila do Conde, Portugal, September 26, 2013 - Portugal's 2013 Volleyball Men’s Supercup will be disputed at the Pavilhão Municipal de Desportos de Vila do Conde at 21:00 (local time). The match will be covered live by SportTV.

The 15th edition will put head-to-head two of the strongest Portuguese teams with national champion Sport Lisboa e Benfica taking on the 2012 Cup of Portugal winner Associação Jovens Fonte Bastardo.

Alexandre Afonso (AJFB coach): “I don’t believe there are any favorites, as both teams want to get their hands on the trophy. It will be a balanced match with an uncertain ending. Above all, I’m hoping for a good show."

On the other side of the net will be Ricardo Perini (setter) who has worn the colours of Fonte Bastardo and moved to Benfica this offseason.

“It will be a very difficult match, because Fonte Bastardo improved its roster, like we did. It will be a good match as both teams want to win despite not being yet at maximum form. We’re growing as a team. The roster is good and we’ve maintained most of the players from last season. I arrived this year and I’m very happy what I’ve been experiencing here”.

Since 1990, several teams have won this trophy which puts head-to-head the previous season champion and the Cup winner. Castelo da Maia GC with five trophies leads the list followed by SC Espinho (4). Sporting CP (3) and SL Benfica (2).

Since 2004/2005, on which Benfica and Fonte Bastardo won the respective divisions A1 and A2, these two teams have played each other 33 occasions, combining National Championship, Cup of Portugal and Supercup with the “Eagles” winning 27 times against the five wins of AJ Fonte Bastardo, which includes the 2011 double victory for the National Championship title.
