Canada and USA qualify to NORCECA Men’s Semis
Langley, Canada, September 26, 2013 – Canada and United States earned byes to the semifinals of the NORCECA Men’s Championship following the conclusion of pool play on Wednesday.
Both teams totaled 10 points by winning two victories in straight sets to win their respective pools. Cuba, the other pool winner, earned 9 points with one of their two wins in four sets.
In Wednesday’s action, Canada downed Mexico 25-22, 25-15, 25-12, Puerto Rico beat Bahamas 25-10, 25-17, 25-20 and Dominican Republic won 25-19, 25-12, 25-23 over Saint Lucia.
In the quarterfinals, Puerto Rico plays Mexico and Cuba meets Dominican Republic. Also Guatemala plays Bahamas in the classification for the 7-9 positions.
“They (Mexico) pushed us on the first two sets, had a very good defense and made us work for every point,” Canada’s captain Fred Winters said. “I think they are missing some important players that might help them.”
“We faced a team that jumps a lot,” Puerto Rico’s coach David Aleman stated. “Their middle blocker and their outside hitter are very strong. Obviously in the first two sets we could control them but in the last one they improved a lot”.
“After winning against Saint Lucia we are among the best six teams of the tournament,” Dominican Republic’s coach Osiel Vazquez said. “That was our goal, but we had 14 unforced errors, fortunately we are in a higher level.”
Canada 3, Mexico 0
Hosts Canada classified to the semifinals after beating Mexico 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-12). John Gordon Perrin registered 20 points for the Canadian team, while Dallas Soonias closed with 15. For Mexico, Tomas Aguilera had seven points. Canada had a huge advantage in the blocking charts with a 12-3 difference.
Puerto Rico 3, Bahamas 0
Puerto Rico clinched a berth in the quarterfinals after winning against Bahamas in straight sets, 25-10, 25-17, 25-20. Roberto Muñiz finished with 15 points for Puerto Rico while Sequiel Sánchez scored 13 and Ezequiel Cruz 10. For Bahamas, captain Prince’Tanique Wilson was the top scorer with 12.
Dominican Republic 3, St Lucia 0
The Dominican Republic qualified to the quarterfinals in defeating Saint Lucia 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-23). Last set was a challenge for the team coached by Osiel Vazquez, after trailing for a while. Elvis Contreras tallied 15 points, while José Miguel Cáceres scored 9 points for the Dominican cause. For Saint Lucia, Joseph Clercent finished with 10.
