Vitor Felipe and Evandro continue rise with Vitoria gold

Vitor Felipe (right) and Evandro Goncalves are now tied at the top of the Brazilian Tour rankings after winning in Vitoria
Vitoria, Brazil, September 22, 2013 – The rise of Vitor Felipe and Evandro Goncalves through the ranks of Brazilian beach volleyball continued apace on Sunday when they won gold at the Vitoria leg of the Banco do Brasil Beach Volleyball Tour.

The youthful duo beat Pedro Salgado and Bruno Schmidt in the final, overcoming the team that is currently sitting second  in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour rankings 2-0 (21-14, 21-19).

The result means Vitor Felipe and Evandro now top the Brazilian Tour rankings, alongside Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego, the winners of the opening Recife leg.

“I am delighted with this wonderful year we are having,” Evandro said. “It was here in Victoria that I played my first leg on the national circuit in 2009, alongside Oscar. I want to say a special thanks to my mother, who came to cheer me on. Only she knows how much I and Vitor Felipe have suffered to get here. It's hard to spend so much time away from family, but the effort is worth it, because it is what we dream about all our lives.”

The Berlin Grand Slam gold medallists beat Brazilian veterans Ricardo Santos and Marcio Araujo in the semi-finals before beating Pedro and Bruno with a performance that Bruno claimed no other team could have lived with.

“The way Evandro and Vitor played here would have caused problems for any team in the World,” Bruno said. “We can keep our heads up as we played a sensational pair, who are in a rich run of form and who merit their win.

“I am happy we stayed in contention till the end. Now we have to prepare for the Sao Paolo Grand Slam, which is the most important tournament of the year for us.”

In the bronze medal match Alison and Emanuel repeated their win over Marcio and Ricardo from the 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships with a 2-0 (21-18, 21-19) victory.

“I was upset not to have reached the final, because I wanted to pay back the entire crowd for their support,” Alison said. “I am proud that we finished on the podium and I look forward to playing many more tournaments here.”
