Dates confirmed for Vizag Open in November

Lausanne, Switzerland, September 17, 2013 – The FIVB is pleased to confirm the new dates for the FIVB Beach Volleyball Open in Vizag, India, which will now take place from November 12 to 17.

The Vizag Open was originally planned to be held from September 4 to 8 however the promoter Leisure Sports Management asked to delay the tournament until November due to political problems in the region. The FIVB agreed to the postponement with an eye to ensuring that the tournament still went ahead, giving athletes greater opportunities to play in different parts of the world.

The Vizag Open is one of four double-gender Open events in 2013 after Fuzhou (China) in April and Anapa (Russia) in August with Durban (South Africa) being the last event of the year from December 11 to 15.

Vizakapatnam, a city of two million people, commonly has its name abbreviated to Vizag and is located on India’s south-west coastline, 1,700km from India’s capital Delhi.

The tentative competition schedule is as follows:
Men’s qualification tournament: Tuesday, November 12
Women’s qualification tournament: Wednesday, November 13
Men’s main draw: Wednesday, November 13 – Sunday, November 17
Women’s main draw: Thursday, November 14 – Sunday, November 17

Please note that the schedule is still to be confirmed and may be subject to changes.

In further FIVB beach volleyball season developments, the FIVB is currently in negotiations with the organisers of the Xiamen Open for women in China to upgrade the tournament to a double gender Grand Slam, which will be held from October 22 or 23 to 27. A final decision is expected on September 30.

With the Phuket Open for women also confirmed to go ahead from October 29 to November 3, the total number of Open events (both double and single gender) in 2013 is six. This is in addition to the nine Grand Slams (or 10 if Xiamen is upgraded) which made up the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour 2013.

In another recent update, the competition schedule for the next event on the  FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour – the Sao Paulo Grand Slam - will start one day earlier to include both the men’s and the women’s tournaments from October 8 to 13, 2013.
