Kenya continue leading as Cameroon upset Tunisia at Women's African Nations
Nairobi. Kenya, September 15, 2013- Host Kenya entertained the home crowd with a fantastic performance as they went to the second victory against their continental arc rivals Egypt in straight sets 25-20, 25-20, 25-12 in the second day of the 2013 Women's African nations Championship held at Kasarani Moi International Sports Center in Nairobi, Kenya on Sunday.
Cameroon fought for more two hours for the second day in row to claim an epic five set win against Tunisia 3-2 (25-12, 20-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-11) in the day's most thrilling encounter, while Senegal played their best to upset the 2011 runner up Algeria 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-19)
At the end of the competition second day Kenya led the standings by 6 points followed by Cameroon 4 and Tunisia and Senegal 3 each.
Senegal v Algeria 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-19)
The up and coming Senegal team demolished Algeria 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-19) in a match dominated completely by the winners who controlled the action defensively and offensively.
With the Victory Senegal improved their win- loss ratio to 1-1 (3 points), while Algeria suffering their second defeat dropped to 0-2 (1 point).
Senegal's attacker Bentou Sow was the match scorer with impressive 16 points followed by Adama Diallo 10 points. Algeria's outside hitter Safia Boukhima contributed 6 points as her side best scorer before she came out of the field for injury.
Senegal looked better in blocking using the middle blocker Sokhna Gueye who is the tournament's tallest player and Maguet Mbow as they made a big gap of 13-1 stuff blocks including 5 for Gueye which is the best blocking performance so far. They succeeded to stop the Algerian attackers throughout the match and they could build up their attacks through the setter Aminata Gueye.
Cameroon fought bravely from a set behind to cruise past Tunisia 3-2 (25-12, 20-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-11) in grueling five- set marathon that made the spectators on their toes for more than two hours.
Now Cameroon improved their win- loss ratio 2-0 (4 points), while Tunisia dropped to 1-1 (3 points) after both teams played two matches.
Cameroon's efficient attacker scored 22 points for her team making the day's best scoring performance as the match scorer followed by Bassoko Moma 11 points. Both Kaothar Jemall and Rahma Agrebi contributed 16 points Tunisia as best scorers from their side.
The blocking dominance was the key factor for the Cameroonian team to win the tough match as they made a competition record of 24 dying blocks against only 6 for the Tunisian team and this was the turn point of the match.
The middle blockers of the winners Youmkil Ngo and Mbala Eba'a played their best and succeeded to stop the Tunisian attackers specially in the fourth set and tiebreak to score the second victory in row after epic five setter.
Kenya v Egypt 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-12)
Kenya overcame the early Egyptian fighting performance to pull off a straight sets victory 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-12) to keep leading the competition in the second day.
Kenya improved their tournament's record to 2-0 (6 points), while Egypt dropped to 0-2 (1 point).
The Kenyan middle blocker Ruth Jepngetich led the Kenyan scorers with 18 points including 3 stuff blocks and 5 ace services, followed by Brackcides Khadambi 13 points. Opposite spiker Aya Elshami and Middle blocker Farida Elaskalany led the Egyptian scorers with 8 points.
It was the service as the main weapon for the host team to put a pressure upon the Egyptian players making 9 aces in the match beside the sold blocking activity.
The Kenyan coach started the match with the full squad and depend on the veteran setter Janet Wanja as the main play maker as they could overwhelm the net action to stop the early Egyptian activity in their way to win the first and second set. He fielded the other setter Jane Wacu in the third set to make a bigger gap and win the set widely 25-12.
