Tahiti & Vanuatu take beach volley gold at Pacific Mini-Games

The tournament’s closing ceremony capped off the day and an outstanding beach volleyball event.

Wallis Island, Wallis and Futuna, September 10, 2013 – Vanuatu have claimed gold in the women’s competition of the Pacific Mini-Games Beach Volleyball tournament and Tahiti in the men’s competition.

The Vanuatu women were the first to claim gold over Papua New Guinea, and while it was a one sided affair 2-0 (21-9, 21-11), the crowd as treated to some great defence and big hitting from the Vanuatu team who have stood out all week.

In the men’s final Tahiti took the first set comfortably and looked to have the match secured in the second set but not before Samoa mounted a comeback to lock the scores at 20 all.

From this point the level of play increased and the fans were on the edge of their seats as the lead see-sawed, with both teams saving set points in spectacular rallies. Tahiti finally produced a spectacular serve that landed perfectly in the back corner of the court to secure the win 2-0 (21-17, 26-24).

Earlier in the day the bronze medals were decided in close matches with the Solomon Islands women’s duo beat Palau 2-1 (21-12, 18-11, 15-13) in a match that could have swung either way. In the men’s competition Papua New Guinea fought back against Tonga to take another impressive victory 2-0 (25-23, 21-15).

The final day at the Pacific Mini-Games was a great occasion, drawing a crowd of over 500 – an impressive feat for an island which has a population of 4,000. The spectators were treated to four excellent matches.
