Qualifying process heats up for FIVB World Championships 2014

Italy's women's team is already qualified for the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship, as hosts of the finals.

Lausanne, Switzerland, September 6, 2013 – Countries will take a significant step towards securing a spot in the FIVB Volleyball World Championships 2014 as they battle in three continental qualification tournaments and a European Championship this week, kicking off a nearly year-long period of high level qualification activity.

Asian counties will have the most pressure this week, as one qualification tournament for women, and two tournaments for men are occurring: Pool A of the Asian Women’s Final Qualification Tournament in Japan (Sept. 4-8), and the Asian Men’s Final Qualification Tournament – Pool A in Australia (Sept. 6-8) and Pool B in Iran (Sept. 11-13). The winners from each of the tournaments will move on to the respective gender’s FIVB World Championships next year.

Along with the World Championship qualification tournaments, two European women’s teams will also have the opportunity to qualify for the FIVB World Championships, during the 2013 CEV Volleyball European Championship. The Women's European championship begins this weekend in Germany and Switzerland on Friday and will end on September 14. The gold and silver medal winners – providing World Championship hosts Italy are not among them – will qualify for the spot in the FIVB Women’s World Championship.

Italy’s women’s team and Poland’s men’s team are already qualified for the FIVB World Championships 2014, as host countries.

The qualification process for the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship Italy 2014 continues across the four other confederations with continental qualification tournaments. South America will be the first confederation to confirm teams at the quadrennial tournament via its continental championship in September.

Europe is the only other confederation to offer tickets (2) to the FIVB Volleyball World Championships via their continental championships.

2014 FIVB Women’s World Championships

Finals hosts Italy is the only team qualified for the 2014 FIVB Women’s World Championships, thus far. However, two Asian counties (the gold and silver medal winners of Pool A’s Asian Women’s Final Qualification Tournament that ends Sept. 8) will be confirmed by the end of the weekend.

NORCECA

The North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) will be the last confederation to qualify all their teams for the 2014 Women’s FIVB World Championships. The final round of the qualification tournaments will occur from May 21 to June 30, where five teams will qualify. The last team will qualify during the NORCECA Continental Playoff, from July 2-7.

ASIA

Two Asian countries will qualify for the 2014 Women’s FIVB World Championships from Pool A this week. The final two countries will qualify through the Pool B tournament, which takes place Sept. 27 to Oct. 1 in China.  In the Asian Women’s Final Qualification Tournament, the 10 teams are divided into two pools of five teams. The two best ranked teams in each pool (total four teams) will advance to the 2014 FIVB World Championships.

AFRICA

Africa will begin its second round of qualifications in October, although the teams that will advance to the 2014 FIVB World Championships won’t be known until after the confederation’s final round in January 2014.

EUROPE

Aside from the two countries qualifying through the 2013 CEV Women’s Volleyball European Championship, and host country Italy, the seven remaining spots for the 2014 FIVB World Championships won’t be known until the final round of confederation qualifiers in early January 2014.

SOUTH AMERICA

South American teams will play in one deciding tournament (Sept. 11-15), where the winner will qualify for both the World Grand Championship Cup and the 2014 FIVB World Championships. The winner of the Confederación Sudamericana de Voleibol (CSV) Championship in October will also qualify for the FIVB World Championships.

2014 FIVB Men’s World Championships

Finals hosts Poland and three-time defending champions Brazil are confirmed for the 2014 FIVB Men’s World Championships, thus far. Brazil qualified by winning the South America Continental Championship on August 12.

NORCECA

The North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) will be the last confederation to qualify all their teams for the 2014 Men’s FIVB World Championships. The third round of the qualification tournaments will occur from May 21 to June 30, where the winners from each of the four Pools will qualify for the FIVB World Championships. The four silver-medal winners will then compete in the NORCECA Continental Cup Playoff from July 9 to 14 in hopes of securing the final FIVB World Championship spot.

ASIA

Two teams will qualify for the FIVB World Championships this weekend – the winner of Pool A in Australia and the winner of Pool B in Iran. The winners of Pool C (Sept. 20-22) and Pool D (Sept. 4-8) will be the last two teams to qualify for the FIVB World Championships.

AFRICA

African teams will have their chance to qualify for the FIVB World Championships during their qualification tournaments, which resume in October. The second round of tournaments will take place in October and November, and the final round takes place in January 2014. The three Pool winners of the third round will move on to the FIVB World Championships.

SOUTH AMERICA

South American men have one more qualification tournament for the 2014 FIVB World Championships than the women. South America has already held the first two rounds of its qualifying tournaments, in which Brazil and Argentina have qualified. Brazil qualified by winning the South America Continental Championship on August 12. The winner of the third round of qualifiers (Sept. 11-15) will join Brazil and Argentina at the FIVB World Championships.

EUROPE

Two countries will qualify through the 2013 CEV Men’s Volleyball European Championship. The five pool winners and the best second placed team from the third round of qualifiers (Jan. 3-5) will also qualify for the FIVB World Championships. Host county Poland will fill the final spot.
