Talita and Lima show no sign of slowing down on home sand

Recife, September 1, 2013 – FIVB World Tour leaders Talita Antunes and Taiana Lima showed their home fans what they’ve been showing the rest of the world by winning the opening stage of the Brazilian competition, the Banco do Brasil Beach Volleyball Tour.

The pair have won five gold medals on the World Tour this years and continued their phenomenal run in their debut season as a team by beating Liliane Maestrini and Rebecca Silva 2-0 (21-14, 21-19) in the final. Meanwhile Juliana Felisberta and Maria Elisa beat last season’s champions Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas in the bronze medal match 2-0 (21-11, 21-11), while Lima was voted player of the tournament.

“I’m not the best player,” Lima said. “This win is about teamwork. We are always helping each other out and making up for each others’ errors. We are able to adjust to many different events on the court, such as the way the ball swerves or changing our defensive system. Our relationship is solid and our defence has improved considerably.

“I’m delighted with our first title on the Brazilian circuit. Earlier this year and half of last season we were just training, but we knew the results would come and after that places on the podium.”

Talita is very much the senior partner in a team that was formed at the start of the year having played at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic Games.

They currently lead the World Tour rankings with 6,090 points, ahead of Germany’s Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler, who are second with 5,422, but Talita is still aware that they will have to be at their very best to end the season with a double of World Tour and Brazilian Tour titles.

“Taiana was brilliant today, especially on defence and she deserves all the praise,” Talita said. “We still need to do more to win the title because the moment we feel content, we will find other teams above us.

“We know we will have to play at a high level to win the double, but what counts right now is the rapport between us.”
