Brazil win Men’s Pan American Cup

Brazil won its second title in the history of the Men's Pan American Cup on Saturday at Juan de la Barrera Gym in Mexico City

Mexico City, Mexico, August 24, 2013 - Brazil defeated Mexico in straight sets (25-21, 25-20, 25-17) to claim the gold medal of the VIII Men’s Pan American Cup on Saturday.

Isac Viana Santos and Mauricio De Souza led the scoring charts of Brazil with 13 and 12 points respectively while Mexico’s Jesus Valdez had a match-high 15 points.

It is the second title for Brazil in the history of the competition with the first one attained in 2011 when the competition took place in Gatineau, Canada. The silver medal of Mexico was their second podium finish with a gold medal in 2007 in the Dominican Republic.

“We are happy with the victory because our main goal was to prepare the team for the U23 World Championship,” Brazilian coach Leonardo Roberley said. “Mexico played a very good tournament, and had very good matches especially the one against the United States.”

In the match for the bronze medal, Argentina edged Puerto Rico in a close five-set battle 3-2 (25-18, 22-25, 25-18, 20-25, 15-12).

Agustín Ramonda scored 26 points and Ezequiel Palacios added 22 for Argentina. Gustavo Vaca contributed 17 points while Ivan Postemsky had 11 for the South American side.

Ezequiel Cruz finished with 24 points in the losing effort while Sequiel Sanchez added 18 and the captain Roberto Muniz charted 12.

It was the third podium position for Argentina adding the bronze medal to their two silvers in 2010 and 2012.

In the first match on Saturday for sixth position, Elvis Contreras had a tournament-high 30 points to lead Dominican Republic to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-14) over Trinidad & Tobago.
