A day of upsets, comebacks & debuts at Moscow Grand Slam
Moscow, Russia, August 22, 2013 – The first day of main draw of the 6th edition of the FIVB Beach Volleyball Moscow Grand Slam was one of upsets, new teams, comebacks and debuts.
For the home country the two losses of top seeded Evgenia Ukolova and Ekaterina Khomyakova was a huge disappointment. But Russia also celebrated some unexpected victories on Thursday.
Serguei Prokopiev and his new partner Grigoriy Goncharov surprised Brazil’s Ricardo Santos and Alvaro Filho and 30th seeded Ekaterina Syrtseva and Alexandra Shiryaeva upset the 3rd seeded Salgado-sisters Maria Clara and Carol.
Russian teams use home advantage
Two Russian teams used the
home advantage at the Moscow Grand Slam to the fullest on Thursday to upset
opponents twice their ‘size’. Serguei Prokopiev and his new partner Grigoriy
Goncharov surprised Brazil’s Ricardo Santos and Alvaro Filho (21-19 19-21
15-13) and 30th seeded Ekaterina Syrtseva and Alexandra Shiryaeva upset the 3rd

With two solid wins on the
first day of pool play at the FIVB Moscow Grand Slam Germany’s Karla Borger and
Britta Buthe celebrated their comeback on the World Tour.

different partners on Thursday at the Moscow Grand Slam, at exactly the same
time and just a few feet away from each other.
Late birthday present for Russia’s Serguei Prokopiev
Russia’s Serguei Prokopiev
got a late birthday present on Thursday at the FIVB Moscow Grand Slam. Just one
day after his name day he and his new partner Grigoriy Goncharov defeated 4th
seeded Brazilians Ricardo Santos and Alvaro Filho 2-1 (19-21, 21-19, 15-13) in
the first round of pool play.
Former basketball star upsets top seeded Russian team
USA’s Kelly Schumacher
crowned her debut on the FIVB World Tour with a surprise win over top seeded
Evgenia Ukolova and Ekaterina Khomyakova at the Moscow Grand Slam on Thursday.
The FIVB Moscow Grand Slam continues on Friday with two rounds of men’s pool play and one round of women’s. The pool winners advance straight to the second elimination round, the numbers two and three to the first knockout round on Saturday.
The semifinals for both genders are scheduled for Sunday, followed by the medal matches.
Moscow is hosting a Grand Slam for the 6th consecutive year, but the event moved to a different location this season. The new venue, Vodny Stadium, is part of a sports complex located in the northern part of Moscow.
