VCP Coaches course enlightens Samoa

A total of 19 former national players, players and coaches participated in the course

Lausanne, Switzerland, August 15, 2013 – The Volleyball Samoa Federation successfully organised an eight-day Volleyball Cooperation Programme Coaches Level I Course with the support of the FIVB from August 1-8.

The course, which was ran by FIVB instructor Shihab Al Din Ahmed Said Al-Riyami from Oman, featured three female and 16 male participants, all former national players, players and coaches from Samoa.

“These eight days have opened our eyes to what volleyball coaching is all about,” the Volleyball Samoa Federation President Petelo Vaifale Muliaga said. “We thought anyone with little knowledge or a former player can just walk in and coach a team and expect good results, but no, coaching is a lot more than just teaching volleyball skills.

“Our natural abilities are not enough, we have to practise and perfect the skills for us to get somewhere in volleyball within the Oceania Zone and most important is getting professional tutoring in both practical and theoretical aspects of the game of volleyball.”

Volleyball is the number one sport in Samoa, which has a population of 194,000, with more than 30 clubs and 45 teams in existence.
