World and Asian Championships next on agenda for Iran
Tehran, Iran, August 8, 2003 – The Iran men’s national volleyball team has begun training under coach Julio Velasco in preparation for September’s final round of Asian qualification tournaments for the World Championship and the Asian Volleyball Championship.
According to the Iranian Volleyball Federation, Julio Velasco has recruited a total of 27 players who have been in training since July 29 at the Azadi Sport Complex in Tehran. Their intensive training regime includes morning and afternoon sessions for three successive days, followed by a rest day.
The Iranian national volleyball team is also scheduled to play warm-up matches against Egypt, Russia and Italy with coach Velasco still to name the players who will take part in these events.
The final round of Asian qualification tournaments for the World Championship will begin in September, with 16 teams fighting in four pools for the four tickets at stake.
On September 6, Australia will
host pool A matches among Kazakhstan, Thailand,
while host Iran will play against Pool B contenders, Pakistan, Indonesia,
and Bahrain for
three days starting September 11.
The 17th Asian Men's Volleyball Championship, which will be held from September 28 to October 6 in Dubai (UAE) will see the participation of 24 teams.
