Brazil capture bronze with win against Peru
Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, August 3, 2013 - Brazil gained their ninth medal in their 13th participation at the Girls' U18 World Championship with a victory in the bronze medal match in straight sets (25-19, 25-23, 25-12) against Peru.
Peru got their best result in the eight times they have participated in the Championship, achieving the same result as they did 20 years ago.
Brazil's center Gabriela (Gaby) Silva was the match star with her best performance of nine killing blocks in addition to her spiking from the center of the net to finish as match scorer with 13 points. Gaby helped stop the efficient Peruvian opposite attacker Angela Leyva who scored only 12 points during the match although she was her team’s top scorer in that match.
Brazil succeeded in making a solid barrier against Peru through their tight blocking at the wings of the net as well as their tight backline defence led by the libero Lais Vasques who did well in defence.
Peru started to come into their own in the second set when they began to use their combinations to work through Brazil’s block and would have succeeded in taking the set if Brazil had not worked well with the outside hitters to win the set.
Peru’s players, exhausted after their five set match against China in the semifinal the previous day, proved no match for Brazil who powered through to win the match in straight sets.
