Brazil v Italy clash highlights the second round at Girls' U 18

Brazil meet Italy in the FIVB Girls' U18 World Championship second round on Thursday at Lipatapanlop Gym. in Thailand

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, July 31, 2013 - A ground breaking clash between World No. 2 Brazil and No. 3 Italy will highlight the second round (Round of 16) matches in the FIVB Girls' U18 World Championship due to be held at Chatchai and Laptapanlop Halls in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand on Thursday.

The major power houses meet earlier than expected after Brazil finished second to USA in Pool C, and Italy surprisingly third in Pool D after defending champions Turkey and dark horses Peru, meet in to be or not be game for both teams, as one of them will continue to play for the Podium, while the other had to play for the 9 to 16 standings.

Host Thailand finishing second in Pool A face World No. 1 China who suffered two unexpected defeats in the first round Pool B to finish third. The record holders of gold medals with three to their name are now fighting to regain their ambitions of winning the title they lost, against Turkey 2 years ago.

Having the perfect record as the only team winning all the pool matches in straight sets, heavy favourites Serbia No. 7 will battle against the new comers Greece who present un-preceeded show in the first round. The Serbian coach Mariana Boricic was afraid that the record may affect negatively her players.

"We should forget completely the first round, now it is the knock out stage, either to continue or to be out of the spot light," Mariana said.

Catching the first position in their last pool match against Greece, World No. 9 Japan play No. 12 Egypt who were the only African team to continue to the second round after other continental representatives Tunisia and Algeria eliminated to play for the 17 to 20 position.

Defending champions Turkey (No. 4) line up against impressive Dominican Republic (No. 8), while dark horses Peru field against exploding Slovenia who entertain first participation in history.

Progressively improving No. 5 USA battle against No. 17 Chinese Taipei and No. 6 Poland meet entertaining Puerto Rico No. 28.

Beside the round of 16, the competition features also 2 matches in the round robin tournament between the teams finished fifth in their preliminary pools for 17 to 20 positions, as Tunisia play Mexico and Argentina face Algeria.
