Germany and Brazil claim the U19 titles in Porto
Porto, Portugal, July 14, 2013 – Germany’s Moritz Reichert and Clemens Wickler and Eduarda Santos Lisboa and Taina Silva Bigi from Brazil claimed the FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 world titles in Porto on Sunday.
USA was the only country to claim two medals, two bronze, at this 12th edition of the U19 World Championships. The silver medals went to Norway in the boys’ competition and Russia in the girls’ competition.
Reichert and Wickler win third U19 title for Germany
Moritz Reichert and Clemens Wickler claimed the third gold medal for Germany in the 12-year history of the boys' FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championship. The 18-year olds beat Norway’s Bjarne Nikolai Huus and Christian Sandlie Sorum 2-0 (21-16 21-17) in the final on Sunday in Porto.
Wickler won a medal before, bronze at the CEV U18 last year with Niklas Rudolf, but for Reichert it was his first. “It’s great. It was awesome playing for such a crowd, there was a nice atmosphere.” More
Brazil's Eduarda and Taina beat Russia to claim the U19 gold
Brazil’s Eduarda Santos Lisboa and Taina Silva Bigi claimed the gold medal at the FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships on Sunday in Porto with a clean 2-0 (21-12 21-16) win over Russia’s Anna Gorbunova and Nadezda Makroguzova.
It is the first medal for Brazil since 2005, when Carolina Aragao and Barbara Seixas claimed the gold. The 14-year old Eduarda won silver with Thais Rodrigues Ferreira just a few weeks ago at the U23 in her debut year and is probably the youngest player to ever win a gold medal at the U19. More
The FIVB U19 World
Championships in Porto were the final of three FIVB age group events after the
U23 in Myslowice and the U21 in Umag in June. Porto, the second largest city in
Portugal, hosted the U19 for the second time after 2010.
