Brazil leads the way to World League Finals

Brazil celebrates win against USA

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 14, 2013 – With another 3-0 victory by the leaders of Pool A, the 2013 FIVB World League Intercontinental Round comes to a close. Brazil beat the USA  (25-21, 26-24, 25-23) Sunday, in the last match before the finals.

Neither team had anything at stake in Sunday’s game. Brazil was already locked in position one of Pool A, with 25 points, followed by Bulgaria with 19 points. Due to Saturday’s loss against Brazil 3-1, the USA was unable to make a comeback, and ends the season in fifth place with 12 points.

The match started close, but Brazil took a two-point lead (12-10) thanks to USA’s many errors. Thanks to good serving, USA jumped ahead 11-8 in the second set, but with a three-point streak on Lucas Saatkamp’s serve, Brazil tied the score 20-20. After an attack error, the home side won the set 26-24. USA committed many errors in third set, trailing Brazil in the score (15-13). USA’s serve put the away side back in the match, but the Brazilians reacted and sealed the victory (25-23).

The match was USA’s first World League straight set defeat since losing 3-0 to Poland in last year's final.

Brazil finished the FIVB World League’s Intercontinental Round at the lead of Pool A, with nine wins and one loss. Brazil is also the leader of points for all teams, followed by Canada, which has 23 points.

The FIVB World League Finals will be held in Mar del Plata, Argentina from July 17 to 21, 2013. The top two teams from pools A (Brazil and Bulgaria) and B (Italy and Russia), the winners of pool C (Canada) and the host nation (Argentina) will compete in the finals.

The organisers, Argentina, are automatically seeded in Pool D as number 1. The other teams are seeded as per the World League Council decision. Brazil is in the Group E, along with Russia and Canada.

Brazil will play their first match of the finals on Wednesday, against Russia.
