Overview of the beach stadium in Porto on Friday

Porto, Portugal, July 12, 2013 - Six teams in the men’s competition of the FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships in Porto advanced to the elimination phase on Friday with three straight wins.

Duos from Poland, Austria, Russia, Germany, Norway and USA advanced without set loss.

In the women’s five teams did the same, including Poland’s U21 champions Kociolek and Gruszscynska and U23 silver medallist Eduarda and her partner Taina.

Brazil’s Eduarda (14): If all goes well, we will be the champions

She is still one of the youngest players at the FIVB U19 World Championships in Porto, but 14-year old Eduarda Santos Lisboa certainly plays above her age. She already won gold in the School World Championships in Italy and silver at the FIVB Beach Volleyball U23 World Championships this year.

On Friday, on the last day of pool play at the FIVB U19 World Championships, Eduarda and her partner Taina Silva Bigi won their pool with three straight wins. More

American MVP’s enjoy the sand in Porto

Torey DeFalco and Lucas Yoder are both celebrated volleyball players in the Junior Nationals in the US, but are doing not so bad either on the sand in Porto. They topped their pool with three straight wins at the FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships.

After 2-0 wins over Zimbabwe and Austria they defeated local heroes Bernardo Martins and Francisco Pombeiro 21-14 21-18 on Friday. More

Italy’s Concetti and Zuccarelli beat Russia to top the pool

Italy’s Gaia Concetti and Agata Zuccarelli topped their pool on Friday at the FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships after a very tight 2-1 (21-16 16-21 21-19) win over Russia’s Daria Myshonkova and Valeriya Shvedova.

Both teams booked two straight wins on Thursday and the final match would bring forth the pool winner. After winning a set each, the lead in the tiebreak went back and forth until the Russians had their first match point at 14-13. After four more match points for Russia and two for Italy, Concetti decided the game with a kill block. More

Venezuela take first loss, but still eye a medal

After finishing 25th in Umag at the FIVB Beach Volleyball U21 World Championships just a few weeks ago Ronald ‘Bolivar’ Fayola and Jose Gregorio ‘Tigrito’ Gomez from Venezuela have their eye on a medal here in Porto at the U19 edition in Porto.

Their 2-0 (21-9 21-18) loss to pool winners Mateusz Lysikowski and Tomasz Wierzbicki on Friday did not change anything to the original plan. More

The U19 event continues on Saturday with both men and women playing three rounds of elimination. Only four teams per gender will remain to compete in the semifinals and medal matches on Sunday.

The FIVB U19 World Championships in Porto are the final of three FIVB age group events this year. Porto hosted the U19 World Championships before in 2010.
