2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Season Update

China becomes the first women’s country other than Brazil or the United States to win a FIVB World Championship gold medal.

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 8, 2013 – The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013 has come to a close. Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen of the Netherlands were crowned the new men’s world champions while China’s Chen Xue and Zhang Xi made history when they became the first world champions from China in the women’s competition.

Thirteenth seeds Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen beat Brazilian 10th seeds Ricardo Santos and Alvaro Filho 2-0 (21-18, 21-16) amongst sensational scenes at Stare Jablonki on Sunday.

A day earlier, top seeds Chen Xue and Zhang Xi lived up to their billing as pre-tournament favourites with an outstanding (18-21, 21-17, 21-19) victory against the tournament’s surprise package Britta Buthe and Karla Borger of Germany in the women’s final.
