Women’s semifinalists and men’s Round of 16 confirmed

Brazil Lili and Seixas proved too good for Italy's Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti
Stare Jablonki, Poland, July 5, 2013 – Plenty of drama and twists and turns was the name of the game as the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013 in Stare Jablonki, Poland completed the fifth day of seven with the women’s competition advancing to the semifinals and the men completing the first round of 32 in the knockout phase.

Saturday’s semifinals will feature the favourites Chen Xue-Xi Zhang of China against Brazilian 12th seeds Liliane Maestrini and Barbara Seixas at 12:00 (local time) followed by the second seeds April Ross-Whitney Pavlik of USA against Germany’s Karla Borger-Britta Büthe, the 16th seeds at 13:00.

Meanwhile, the men’s competition advanced to the Round of 16, which will start at 09:45 on Saturday.

Women’s preview - Borger and Büthe make history reaching the final four at the World Championships
Karla Borger and Britta Büthe made history on Friday as the first German team to ever reach the final four of the women’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. They prevented an all-American semifinal with a 2-1 win (17-21 21-16 15-11) over American veterans Lauren Fendrick and Brittany Hochevar. The Germans will play another US team, second seeded April Ross and her new partner Whitney Pavlik for a spot in the final. More

Men’s review - Dalhausser and Rosenthal stay on course at World Champs
Phil Dalhausser and Sean Rosenthal kept up their quest to win the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013 when they beat their fellow Americans Jacob Gibb and Casey Patterson 2-0 (23-21, 21-16) on Friday. The sides pushed each other hard in the first set, but in the second Dalhausser and Rosenthal managed to take control and then kept Gibb and Patterson at arm’s length to close out the win. More

Women’s preview - Lili and Seixas standing between favourites and final
Liliane Maestrini and Barbara Seixas de Freitas have the ominous task of facing number one seeds Chen Xue and Zhang Xi in the first of the women’s semifinals at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013 on Saturday. Men’s preview - Kadziola and Szalankiewicz carrying a nations hopes
Michal Kadziola and Jakub Szalankiewicz will be trying to keep the hopes of the host nation alive after they became the only Polish side to reach the men’s round of 16 that takes place on Saturday at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013. They will now play Germany’s Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik in the next round after defeating Austria’s Daniel Müllner and Jorg Wutzl on a day in which the other three Polish men’s teams were knocked out. More

End of the dream for Vanuatu 
One of the great success stories of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Miller Elwin and Henriette Iatika of Vanuatu finally had their dream run come to a close in the women’s Round of 16 at the hands of the favourites and top seeds from China Chen Xue and Xi Zhang on Friday. The 25 and 28-year-old respectively have hit the headlines throughout the five days of the tournament with their outstanding performances, which saw them finish third in their pool to advance to the knockout phase, record an impressive win over 15th seeds Kristyna Kolocova  and Marketa Slukova in the Round of 32 before falling to Xue and Zhang Xi 2-0 (22-20, 21-11). More

Blog - Laciga sees young teams going far in men’s World Champs

The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013 takes place every two years. The event in Stare Jablonki runs from July 1 to 7 with the women’s finals on Saturday and men’s finals on Sunday.
