World League week five ends with wins for Korea, Serbia, Italy, Netherlands, Japan

Serbia's team celebrates its victory over Germany

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 30, 2013 – The Netherlands secured another win against Korea, Italy redeemed itself after its first loss against Iran, Serbia edged Germany, Japan beat Portugal and Poland survived an initial scare and beat Argentina to wrap up week five of the FIVB World League on Sunday.

Netherlands bagged back-to-back wins against Korea in their Pool C match at Yugwansoon Gym on Sunday. The Dutch attackers and blockers dominated the game in first and second sets, but overall, the Netherlands' team play was better than their opponents. The Netherlands scored 43 points on attack and limited their errors to just 11 faults to finish the match 1-3 (20-25, 22-25, 25-21, 20-25.)

Italy came back from a loss Friday against new FIVB World League competitor, Iran, to win a five-set match 3-2 at home (25-22, 25-20, 18-25, 15-13). Nearly 4,300 fans turned out to watch the match, which pitted the Italians against Iran, who formerly coached Italy’s national women’s and men’s teams.

Serbia edged Germany to secure a home win 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 25-22, 21-25, 15-12). Aleksandar Atanasijevic of Serbia topped the scorers’ chart with 31 points, while Denys Kaliberda scored 20 for the winners. Germany started the match with two excellent blocking kills to take an early 3-1 lead. However, when Atanasijevic stepped up to the service line, Serbia scored six consecutive points to turn the score in their favour 7-3. In the tie-break, Serbia got an early 2-point lead and successfully maintained the gap until Germany tied the score at 10-10. From that moment on, the crowd could see a great battle between the two teams. Serbia got first to the match point with an wonderful spike by Atanasijevic for 14-12. And it was precisely Atanasijevic who wrapped up the match with another potent spike for 15-12 and 3-2 overall.

Japan beat Portugal 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 28-30, 25-22, 15-10) as the team gained confidence to secure their third victory in 2013 FIVB Volleyball World League. Alexandre Ferreira was the best scorer of the match with 27 points, but confessed at the end that “the team lacked some confidence” in front of a “very strong team.”

Poland also survived an initial scare and beat Argentina 3-1 (18-25, 25-21, 26-24 and 25-17) in the closing match of the fourth week of the 2013 FIVB World League. Michal Winiarski of Poland, was named the MVP of the match with 16 points, while Argentina's Ivan Castellani led his team with 13 points. Argentina started the match with a different lineup than on Friday, using stronger and more experienced players. This resulted in their strong play from the beginning of the first set.
