Bronze for Brazil, their 12th medal in 17 editions
Brno, Czech Republic, June 30, 2013 – Brazil, the only team to participate in every edition of the World Championship U20 so far, got the bronze on Sunday with a victory in straight set against Italy (28-26, 25-21, 25-18). World Champion Italy, after their title abdication in the semifinal with Japan, left definitively the podium conquered in 2011 in Peru. For Brazil is the 12th medal out of 17 editions: 6 gold, 4 silver, 2 bronze.
The first set was the more balanced of the bronze medal match, an exciting fight which ended when Brazil middle blocker Vaquiria’s block on Anna Nicoletti, closing the set in favour of Brazil 28-26.
Brazil was always ahead in the second set, helped by some wrong serves from Italy, which suffered this gap for the entire set. Rosamarie Montibeller did not fail the second set ball on 24-21.
The third set started with a change of line-up for Italy: coach Davide Mazzanti confirmed Alessia Fiesoli as opposite spiker in place of Anna Nicoletti, Laura Melandri as blocker with captain Cristina Chirichella on the bench. Then on 12-7 the Italian coach changed also the setter (Chiara Scacchetti in, Giulia Carraro out). Brazil was leading 15-10 and it was clear that Italy was too far from the South Americans rhythm in this match. The second set ball after 24-16 was scored by Sara Aparecida Dias Silva from the right side of the net, closing the crucial set 25-18 and sending the enthusiastic Brazilian to dance in their changing room.
