Iran beats Italy, while Poland claim first win in World League

Iran had lost their three previous matches against volleyball superpower Italy

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 28, 2013 – Iran stunned Italy, Poland picked up their first win when they beat Argentina in five sets and Russia helped Cuba extend their losing streak to a record-equalling seven in FIVB World League action on Friday.

In other matches on Friday, Brazil defeated France 3-2 (25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 21-25, 15-12) in Sao Paulo, Canada beat Finland 3-1 (25-13, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20) in Tampere, Finland, and USA handed Bulgaria their first lost in this year’s tournament with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-21) victory in Reno.

Iran, coached by former Italy coach Julio Velasco in its debut year in the World League, won a thriller in Modena, Italy, edging the Italians in four sets (25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 32-30). “They played a fantastic match,” said Italy captain Cristian Savani.

Defending champions Poland had to fight hard for their first win this year, eventually overcoming Argentina 26-24, 19-25, 19-25, 25-17, 15-8) with a strong contribution from Bartosz Kurek, who scored 27 points. “I think the difference between Poland and Argentina tonight was Bartosz Kurek and his serves,” Argentina coach Javier Weber said.

In Havana, Cuba were hoping the home support might help them to their first victory in this year’s tournament, but in the end Russia proved too strong, winning 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-23). “They forced us to play at our best,” said top scorer Nikolay Pavlov.

World League action continues with seven matches on Saturday.
