Undefeated Russia falls to Italy in first match of week four

Russia’s longest World League winning streak came to an end Friday

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 21, 2013 – Top team, Russia, received a blow Friday, during the first match of week four of the 2013 FIVB World League, while France received its first win of the season.

Russia’s longest World League winning streak came to an end Friday when Italy defeated the home team 3-1 (26-24, 28-30, 25-20, 25-17). With Italy’s win, the undefeated team stands at 5-0 and make their way to the top of Pool B, with 14 points.

"We were determined to fight today and we fought well,“ said coach Berruto Mauro. "Tomorrow the game will be different, but we hope the result will be the same."

With qualification for the Finals - which will be held in Mar del Plata, Argentina from July 17 to 21 - in mind, the loss for the Russians, who have won their last seven matches against Italy dating back to the 2008 World League, hits hard as the team is now in second place in Pool B, with 11 points.

Italy and Russia meet again at the same venue, Energetik, on Saturday.

Iran was unable to beat Serbia in its first-ever World League home match, where the team lost 2-3 in a five set match (24-26, 23-25, 25-17, 16-18).

Serbia is working to keep their hopes of reaching the finals alive against World League debutants Iran. If Serbia wins again on Sunday, the team would equal their second best ever start since competing as an independent country.

With no victories since the beginning of the 2013 World League, France and Poland shared a common goal while competing in Rouen on Friday night, securing a first win. But in the tie-break match, France took the lead with Earvin Ngapeth clinching the set with a decisive spike, getting the win for his team, 3-2 (25-23, 21-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-11).

Winner of the World League last year, Poland lost their third game in a row. For France, this victory came at the best time, after two defeat at home against Bulgaria and then two more on the road against Team USA. France and Poland will face again on Sunday night in Toulouse.
