Lausanne, Switzerland, June 7, 2013 – Argentina and Serbia came up with big wins on the road as the FIVB World League moved into its second weekend of action on Friday.

Argentina used tough serving and defence to defeat the United States 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 22-25, 26-24), while Serbia overcame Cuba by a similar score: 25-17, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20. In the day’s other match, Canada rolled past Portugal 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-18).

Argentina, USA, Serbia and Cuba were playing their first matches in this year’s World League. Canada now has a 2-1 record in Pool C, while Portugal dropped to 1-2.

Argentina’s Pablo Bengolea led all scorers in the USA match in Wichita with 16 points on 15 kills and one ace. Argentina out-hit the United States 52-43 while the U.S. led in blocks, 13-11 and aces, 6-5. Argentina scored 30 points on U.S. errors while committing 26.

“Javier and I have been friends for a long time,” U.S. coach John Speraw said. “Even though we did not come out on top, I enjoyed (the match). His team plays a style of volleyball that I respect.”
