Iran and Russia finish day one at World League
Kaliningrad, Russia, June 7, 2013 – In their first appearance at the 2013 FIVB World League, Iran and Russia faced off in a battle that proved success for the new coach of the Olympic champions.
“I am satisfied with the result, since this is my first match as a head coach. Iran can play much better and we must be prepared for a fight tomorrow,” said Russian coach Voronkov Andrey.
Russia sealed a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-17) win over Iran in front of their home fans on Friday.
“We are happy with the result of this match, but we have to go on working, since our team has a lot of new players and we didn't have much time to work on our cooperation,” said Russia’s captain Makarov Sergey.
The first and second sets were an equal affair between the two teams, but Russia put pressure on their guests during the third set, with effective spiking.
“It’s not easy to play against the Olympic champions, but we are here to lean and improve our game,” said captain of Iran’s Men’s National Team, Marouflakrani Mir Saeid.
“We fought well until the middle of the third set, but we had a lot of mistakes after the score of the sets was more than 20,” said Iran’s coach Velasco Julio.
