Italy to warm up against France as World League fixtures approach
Cuneo, Italy, May 30, 2013 – Italy are preparing for their forthcoming World League matches by playing two friendly fixtures against France. The games will take place on Friday May 31 in Cuneo, and Saturday June 1, in Piacenza. Several new players have been added to the Italy squad coached by Mauro Berruto, as the side look to build on their excellent performance at the London 2012 Olympic Games, where they won the bronze medal.
Among them are Thomas Beretta and Matteo Piano. “After a long time getting ready, it is game time,” says Beretta. “I’m excited and very happy for this opportunity. Everything has gone well for me this year. To be preparing for Rio in 2016 is an honour. Now we have two games with France, during which I hope to make my contribution."
“On a personal level I’m curious to see if I can compete with athletes of this calibre. It’s a tough legacy, because I have the number one shirt, which was worn by Luigi Mastrangelo. Let’s just say that this puts me under a little pressure.”
Matteo Piano is also keen to get started. “To say I am excited is an understatement,” he says. “This is a wonderful experience, an opportunity that doesn’t happen every day. I will try to do my best.”
“We train with athletes used to competing in high level competitions. Everything is treated in detail. The preperation, technically and physically, is truly exceptional. In such a setting, I can only improve. We are young and we really want to do well.”
Italy’s first World League matches, against Germany, will be held in Modena on June 7, at 20:30. On June 4, at 11am, the head coach of the Italian side, Mauro Berruto, will give a press conference at the G.Panini Casa Modena stadium. The Federal President Carlo Magri, and CEO of Asics Italia, Luca Bacherotti, will also be present.
