European teams battle for ticket to third-round of Women's World Champs qualification

On Saturday Slovakia came back from two sets down to edge Austria and remain in contention for first place in Pool E

Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, May 26, 2013 – After completion of two rounds of action, some teams have already secured they will continue their adventure in the 2014 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship via the second stage of the European qualification process scheduled for early October. However, Sunday will provide the Volleyball fans with more actions to follow as the last matches on schedule will determine the winners of the various groups who will be by-passing the second qualification round and move directly to the third and last coming up in January 2014.

As they scored their second consecutive win in the competition edging the F.Y.R. of Macedonia in straight sets (25-15, 25-13, and 25-10), the players of Croatia’s national team could make sure they will progress their campaign in the 2014 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship at least via the second stage of the qualification process slated for early October. On Sunday Croatia will play the hosts of Montenegro who also scored their second win by besting Bosnia and Herzegovina 3:1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-18, and 25-23) for first place in Pool A and the right to move directly to the third round that is scheduled for January 2014.

The second day of action for the first-round World Championship qualifier – Pool B taking place at “Olimpiets” sports hall in Mogilev did not contribute any major sensation. The hosts of Belarus could easily down Denmark in three straight sets (25-12, 25-9, and 25-11) to claim their second victory in the competition and they were emulated by Israel that did also best Finland in three sets (25-13, 25-12, and 25-22). Belarus and Israel have already secured a ticket to the second round and the winner of their clash coming up on Sunday will get the right to advance directly to the third stage of the qualification process.

On Saturday the home heroines of Belgium scored their second win at the first-round qualifier for the 2014 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Champs – Pool C taking place this weekend in Kortrijk. Even though head coach Gert Vande Broek decided to rest some of his starting players, the second lines did show no mercy for Northern Ireland (25-7, 25-4, and 25-8) so that on Sunday Belgium will be playing Switzerland for first place in the Pool and for that much desired ticket to the third qualification round scheduled for early January 2014.

Ukraine and Hungary will be playing on Sunday for first place in Lutsk, the city that hosts one out of six first-round qualification tournaments for the 2014 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship running this week in Europe. On the second day of action in Pool D Ukraine downed Moldova in straight sets (25-6, 25-16, and 25-19) while their next opponents, Hungary, did the same with Albania (25-13, 25-14, and 25-18).

In Pool E Slovakia and Greece prolonged their winning streak but the spectators could follow a real drama on Saturday. The home heroines of Slovakia claimed a dramatic five setter against Austria (22-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-17, and 15-12) coming back from two sets down and 13:17 in the third. Greece beat Liechtenstein 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, and 25-11) to top the provisional charts of the group with six points. Slovakia is second with five. Both teams have already clinched a ticket to the next round and the winner of Sunday’s match will move directly to the third stage of the qualification process.

In Pool F Estonia’s ladies look on their way to claim that much desired ticket to advance directly to the third round of the 2014 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship qualification process after on Saturday they scored their second win in Daugavpils edging Iceland in three straight sets (25-16, 25-15, and 25-10). The home girls of Latvia are still in contention for second place in the group for on Saturday they claimed their first win by routing their neighbors from Lithuania in three sets too (28-26, 25-14, and 25-21).
