El Salvador scores important pair of victories

St Croix, Virgin Islands, May 25, 2013 – El Salvador moved within one victory for a spot in the NORCECA Third Round towards the 2014 FIVB Women’s World Championship in Italy following its two wins on Saturday at the Group K Qualification Tournament.
The Salvadorans defeated hosts U.S. Virgin Islands (1-1) and meet St Vincent and Grenadines (1-1) on Sunday morning to conclude the preliminary phase. The home team plays the winless British Virgin Islands (0-2) at Ronald “Ranche” Charles Arena in St Croix.
The top two teams after the preliminary round earn spots in next year’s third round. The third place team still remains with a chance of advancing to the next round but only as the best NORCECA ranked of all third placed sides of the six tournaments of this year as of January 2014.
El Salvador had defeated British Virgin Islands in straight sets earlier on Saturday while U.S. Virgin Islands blanked St Vincent and Grenadines at the morning session. In the first match of the afternoon, St Vincent won in consecutive sets over BVI.
El Salvador v British Virgin Islands
El Salvador cruised past British Virgin Islands to win in straight sets (25-12, 25-17, 25-9) the first match Saturday morning. Diana Romero finished with 16 points for the winning squad followed by Dennise Rogel and Adriana Flores with 8 points apiece. The winners scored via 14 aces including six by Romero.
U.S. Virgin Islands v St Vincent and Grenadines
U.S. Virgin Islands overpowered St Vincent and Grenadines 25-6, 25-16, 25-17) in the second match of Saturday morning. Danielle Selkridge scored 13 points to spearhead the offense of the home team. Sacha Gumbs added 9 while Valissa Brathwaite and Tamisha Barry each contributed 6 tallies. U.S. Virgin Islands held an 11-0 advantage in the aces division.
St Vincent and Grenadines v British Virgin Islands
St Vincent & Grenadines swept past British Virgin Islands 25-19, 25-17, 25-18 on Saturday evening to equalize at 1-1 their win-loss record. Bretisha Gregg and Krystal Ralph topped the winners with 10 and 8 points respectively while Shaquille Branker and Bownie Allicot charted 7 apiece. Tyalia Nibbs had six points for the losers. St Vincent held a 12-6 margin in blocks and 5-1 in aces.
El Salvador v U.S. Virgin Islands
El Salvador bounced back to defeat hosts U.S. Virgin Islands 18-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-23 for its second victory of Saturday. Diana Romero and Denisse Rogel each had 10 points for the winners while Adriana Flores added nine of her own. Valissa Brathwaite and Danielle Selkridge finished with 13 and 10 for the losers while Rhea Simon had eight. El Salvador made 31 unforced errors compared to 55 by the home side. The losers held advantages of 7-2 in blocks and 5-2 in aces.
