Memorial tournament helps teams prepare for U19 World Championship

Anapa, Russia, May 25, 2013 - The junior Russian national team emerged victorious at the second international tournament of legendary volleyball player and trainer Yury Chesnokov, at Volley Grad complex near Anapa, Russia, getting the team prepared for the FIVB Volleyball Boys' U19 World Championships.

The junior Russian national team, won all four matches of the tournament, which were played against Russia, Mexico, Argentina and Poland. The tournament is one of the most important stage of competitive preparation for the World Cup in Mexico, which takes place June 27 to July 7.

"During preparation for the World Cup, this tournament gave out team a huge advantage," said Alexander Karikov, head coach of the junior national team. 

Karikov said he took advantage of the tournament to observe the other teams' play, including the early round play-off between Mexico and Poland, and Argentina, which is a favorite for the World Cup. 

"I am happy with our result and victory, but this is not the most important," he said. "Thanks to the tournament of memory of Chesnokov, there is an understanding of at what level of readiness we are in the run-up to the World Cup. 

The tournament was organised at the highest level, and colleagues from the foreign national teams expresses they were happy with how the games carried out with its conditions, trainings, accommodation and food.

Russia – 12 (4-0)

Argentina – 9 (3-1)

Poland – 6 (2-2)

Mexico – 3 (1-3)

Serbia – 0 (0-4)
