Cuba to play Argentina for World League warm-up
Twelve of Cuba's players will compete in the four-match friendly series, three of them against the Argentina National Team. The fourth will be against the second team of the South American country. Argentina, which finished in 10th place in last year’s World League, will play hosts of the Finals this year scheduled in Mar del Plata for a second time.
The Cuban team will be composed of wing spikers Rolando Cepeda, Lázaro Fundora and rookie Abraham Alfonso, as well as universal Yordan Bisset. Also in the team is middle blockers Isbel Mesa, David Fiel, Danger Quintana and Liván Osoria; setters Lian Sem Estrada and Leandro Macías, and liberos Keibel Gutiérrez and Gustavo Leyva.
The managing team is directed by experienced Orlando Samuels, assisted by trainers Pavel Pimienta and Nicolás Vives. Doctor Julio Miñoso and physiotherapist Yoan Aladro are also part of the team.
The Argentinean team announced for this match the participation of setters Luciano De Cecco and Nicolás Uriarte; liberos Alexis González and Facundo Santucci, and universals Iván Castellani, Bruno Romanutti and Guillermo García. Also in the team, wing spikers Facundo Conte, Rodrigo Quiroga, Cristian Poglajen, Federico Pereyra, Pablo Bengolea and Nicolás Bruno, and middle blockers Pablo Crer, Sebastián Solé, Martín Ramos and Maximiliano Gauna.
The South American team is included in pool A together with Brazil, Poland, the United States, Bulgaria and France. Cuba is included in pool B with Russia, Italy, Serbia, Germany and Iran. Pool C is composed of Canada, Korea, Finland, Holland, Japan and Portugal.
Argentina will also have the responsibility to organize the World League Finals in Mar del Plata. The host city will welcome the event for the second time, while it is the third time the tournament will be held in Argentina.
The FIVB World Volleyball League Intercontinental Round will take place from May 31 to July 14. The FIVB World League Finals are from July 17 to 21.
