Trinidadians favored to win women’s Group I at home
Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, May 21, 2013 – Hosts Trinidad & Tobago are heavily favored to win the NORCECA Second Round Group I Tournament, a qualification event towards the 2014 FIVB Women’s World Championship in Italy to be held on May 25-26 at Sports and Physical Education Centre of West Indies University.
The Trinidadians, eighth in NORCECA, not only are currently the best ranked side among the four squads but also bring the most experienced team.
Barbados (13th), Honduras (18th) and Anguilla (22nd), round up the list of teams to be competing twice a day under a round-robin format.
The top two teams will be granted tickets to the third round of tournaments to be held in 2014. The third place finisher still will have a chance of making into the third round but only as the best ranked of the bronze medalists from all six groups of the second phase events scheduled this year.
Trinidad & Tobago took first place in the NORCECA Group A Tournament held last September 1-2 at Surinam. Barbados and Anguilla placed second in the Groups E and D competitions held in Jamaica and St Kitts and Nevis respectively. Honduras ended up in third place in the Group H held in Nicaragua.
The home team won its four matches last September in Paramaribo, Surinam with the captain Krystle Esdelle named as the Most Valuable Player. Not only Esdelle provided her leadership qualities but also carried on her shoulders most of the offensive load of Trinidad & Tobago.
The participating teams will arrive in Port of Spain on May 25 while the members of the NORCECA control committee will do it one day earlier.
The first second-round women’s tournament of the year took place in Curacao on May 11-12 with hosts Curacao and St Lucia booking spots in the third-round phase in 2014.
