Opening day wraps up at China International

Coaching legend Lang Ping made a successful debut against Puerto Rico

Ningbo, China, May 17, 2013 – Opening day of the China Women's International Tournament resulted in resilient successes for some teams, while others look to make quick adjustments for the second phase on Saturday, in preparation for the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix on August 2.

In Friday's first match, Thailand - last year’s surprise World Grand Prix Finalists - held off a resilient Cuba to win a five-set game (25-18, 25-21, 19-25, 22-25, 17-15). Onuma Sittipak earned 18 points for Thailand while Rosana Giel finished with 19 points for Cuba.

Thailand, ranked 12th in the world, recorded their best ever World Grand Prix result last year when they qualified for the final six for the second successive year before finishing fourth, bettering their previous best finish of sixth from 12 months earlier.

China defeated Puerto Rico (25-12, 25-20, 25-14) on their debut with recently appointed coach Jenny Lang Ping in a match that lasted 71 minutes.

The Chinese
started up with Hui Ruoqi (Captain), Yin Na, Yang Junjing Xu Yunli, Zeng Chunlai, Shen Jingsi and Shan Danna and after a comfortable first set, scored five consecutive points to take the second set, despite Puerto Rico's 17-14 lead. China relied on 13 blocks and 26 opponents’ errors to win the game.

Puerto Rico plans to make some quick adjustments for its game against Cuba on Saturday.
