Curacao secures spot in NORCECA third round
Willemstad, Curacao, May 11, 2013 – Hosts Curacao won its two matches on Saturday to secure a spot in next year’s round of qualifiers towards the FIVB Women’s World Championship in Italy as one of the finalists of the NORCECA Second Round Pool J.
The home girls first won 25-12, 25-22, 25-19 over St Lucia when USA-based Christine Anthony and Geraldine Grigorius combined for 24 points at the International School of Curacao Auditorium, Willemstad on Saturday morning.
Anthony, who attends the University of North Carolina ended with 13 points, while Grigorius added 11, including four aces and one block.
They came back in the evening session to sweep past Antigua & Barbuda 25-8, 25-9, 25-9 with Anthony and Grigorius as the main offensive contributors.
Anthony finished with 13 points while Grigorius added 12, including two blocks.
In the other two matches on Saturday, Belize defeated Antigua & Barbuda 3-1 (25-11, 18-25, 25-17, 25-13) and then lost to St Lucia (24-26, 25-18, 26-24, 25-17).
Tichele Solis with 17 points and Shantell Arnold with 15, including five blocks and four aces, led Belize against Antigua & Barbuda.
Samantha Mann led four players of St Lucia with double figures in scoring with 15 points against Belize. Dania Hamilton added 14 while Latoya Edward and Natalie Edward each contributed 13 points.
