Universidad César Vallejo win Peruvian Women’s Volleyball League

UCV celebrate their title win
Universidad César Vallejo win Peruvian Women's Volleyball League

Lima, Peru, April 30, 2013 – Universidad César Vallejo (UCV) have made history by becoming the first team from their province to be crowned champions of the Peruvian Women’s Volleyball League. The Trujillo-based side won the title in front of 13,500 spectators and the cameras of Movistar TV at the Eduardo Dibos venue last weekend.

As a result of their win, UCV gained a place in the South American Women’s Club tournament, which takes place from May 1 to May 5 in Lima. This competition is a qualifier for the Women's World Cup, which will be staged in Switzerland this October.

It wasn’t easy for UCV, who are coached by Natalia Malaga, to win the Peruvian title. They lost their first game 3-2 on Thursday (13-25, 25-19, 25-23, 20 -25, 12-15) before bouncing back on Saturday, winning their second game 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-20).

This took them into the final match against Universidad San Martín 2nd, which went to a dramatic five sets. With star players Milagros Moy and Veronica Contreras, who had returned home after playing for 10 years in Europe, UCV managed to come back from 2-1 down to win the tournament (25-18, 20-25, 17-25, 25-18, 15-10).

Milagros Moy, who played in the Peruvian side at both the Atlanta and Sydney Olympic Games, won the MVP award. “It was a surprise ending, we knew we had to fight for every ball to achieve our goal,” said Moy after the game. “At all times I relied on my team, and even though everything seemed against us, we got the party going. I am very happy to return to my country and win the title.”

In the match for third place, S. Cristal won the bronze after defeating Alianza Lima 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-18).
