Teams confirmed for Fuzhou Open
Lausanne, Switzerland, April 12, 2013 – The team positions for the opening tournament of the 2013 beach volleyball season – the Fuzhou Open in China – are confirmed following the passing of the deadline for federations to make any changes to their respective teams.
Federations had up until the end of Thursday (Lausanne time) to confirm which of their teams would fill their respective national federation positions in the Fuzhou Open Main Draw and Qualification tournaments.
Leading the way in the men’s competition are world champions and Olympic silver medallists Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego in Position 1 followed by the new American combinations Sean Rosenthal and Phil Dalhausser and Jacob Gibb and Casey Patterson in Position 2 and 3 respectively.
The women's competition sees last year’s World Tour runners up Chen Xue and Xi Zhang of China in Position 1 followed by Brazil’s new pairing Maria Antonelli and Agatha Bednarczuk and Sanne Keizer and Marleen Van Iersel of the Netherlands in Position 2 and 3 respectively.
The actually seeding for the tournament will be updated following the Technical Meeting on the eve of the tournament. The seeding will be based on the sum of the individual rankings taking into consideration the status as at -21 days.
Confirmed wild cards are Cheng Chen and Jian Li (CHN) and Isaac Kapa and Christopher McHugh (AUS) in the men’s competition and, Heather Bansley and Elizabeth Maloney (CAN) and Fan Wang and Jingjing Ding (CHN) in the women’s draw.
Due to the limited number of reserve teams, the FIVB has decided to offer such teams (after country quota) to take part in the Qualification tournament. For the men’s competition there are 18 which will be given the opportunity to participate.
The Fuzhou Open, set to take place from April 23 to 28, is the first of eight Open events during a bumper ninth-month season, which also includes the FIVB World Tour – 10 Grand Slams and the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Stare Jablonki, Poland. The Shanghai Grand Slam is the next tournament on the calendar running from April 30 to May 5.
The distribution of national federation vacancies in the Main Draw, Qualification and Reserve lists are based on federation ranking points which take into consideration the best six-out- of-the-last-eight results dating back 365 days on a player by player basis for the respective country.
