World champs looking for better Shanghai performance
Shanghai, China, April 16, 2013 – FIVB world champions Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego will be out to lay down a marker ahead of the defence of their world title later in the year at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Stare Jablonki, Poland when Shanghai, China’s financial capital plays host to the opening Grand Slam tournament of 2013, the first of 10 tournaments on a new and improved FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour.
A year ago the Olympic silver medallists missed out on the podium after they lost to fellow Brazilians Pedro Salgado and Marcio Araujo in the quarterfinals. In the final, USA’s Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser beat compatriots Jacob Gibb and Sean Rosenthal, but since then Dalhausser and Rosenthal have teamed up and the tournament at the City Beach Volleyball Centre will be an early test of their combination.
London 2012 Olympic Games gold medallist Julius Brink is likely to be starting a new partnership with Sebastien Fuchs following the retirement of his long-term partner Jonas Reckermann, while Italian duo Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo will be out to show that knocking defending champions Rogers and Dalhausser out of the Olympics was no one-off.
The 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour will run over a six month period and features 10 mixed-gender Grand Slam tournaments across four of the five confederations, the last of which takes place in Sao Paolo, Brazil from October 9-13.
The calendar also features the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships that take place in Stare Jablonki, Poland from July 1-7.
It is the ninth straight year in which Shanghai has hosted a men’s FIVB World Tour event and the final takes place on May 4.
Following the completion of the Shanghai Grand Slam the World Tour moves onto the Corrientes Grand Slam in Argentina from May 22-26.
