Egypt riding high after claiming three age-category African Nations Championship titles

Egypt's Girls Youth team celebrate their title

Cairo, Egypt, March 28, 2013 – Egypt’s victory at the 2013 Girls’ Youth African Nations Championship on Wednesday, has only confirmed the North African country’s dominance in the sport following their titles in three out of four recent age-category tournaments.

Egypt also took the Boys' Youth (U19) African Nations Championship in Algeria and the Women's Junior (U20) competition in Nigeria. Tunisia claimed the fourth competition – the Men's Junior (U21) tournament – in their homeland.

The Egyptian girls were the last to be crowned on Wednesday after they won the round-robin competition. Tunisia came second, followed by Algeria and Rwanda.

The Egyptian team won all three matches in straight sets. In addition to the title, Egypt took the following three of the seven individual awards: Most Valuable Player (Aya Khalid), Best Attacker (Sarah Hanafy) and Best Blocker (Heidi Kandel).

With the conclusion of the four age-group championships, all the African vacancies at the respective FIVB World Championships have been determined.

Egypt, Tunisia, Rwanda and Algeria have qualified for the Boys' U19 Championships, which will take place from June 27 to July 7 in Mexicali and Tijuana, Mexico. Tunisia, Egypt, Rwanda and Morocco will go to the Men's U21 Championship to be held in Ankara and Izmir (Turkey) from August 22 to September 1. Egypt, Algeria and Nigeria claimed the Women's Junior berths while Egypt and Tunisia clinched the Girls’ youth slots.
