International referee Parthasarathi Margalingam passes away

Lausanne, Switzerland, March 27, 2013 – Parthasarathi Margalingam, one of India's most respected volleyball referees and an authority on the rules of the game, has passed away at 70.

Margalingam was an international referee, a FIVB Referees Instructor and Chairman of the Referee Committee of the Volleyball Federation of India (VFI). Having refereed at national and continental events, Margalingam earned praise for his application of the rules of the game and for his efforts to transfer his knowledge to others. Margalingam also helped launch the careers of many players in Karnataka.

“He knew each and every rule by-heart. He could make all the rules seem so simple even though they are not,” said national referee Anandan, who also served as the Chairman of the Referees Board of the Karnataka Volleyball Association.

As a player, Margalingam was a member of the ITI team for more than a decade. He took up refereeing after retirement and passed the international referees’ course in 1980. He officiated several international matches from 1981 to 1988, including the 1982 Asiad in Delhi. He also served as chief referee in numerous national championships.

Margalingam qualified as FIVB Instructor for international volleyball referees in 2003, a role he carried out with distinction across India and overseas, conducting clinics and courses. His last assignment was in October last year, where he served on the Technical Sub-Committee for Referees at the Asian Junior women’s championship in Thailand.
