Honduras and Costa Rica capture gold medals

San Jose, Costa Rica, March 17, 2013 - Honduras defeated Costa Rica in five sets (25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 24-26, 15-12) to claim their first gold medal ever in men's volleyball in the history of the Central American Games on Saturday.

MVP Luis Salgado recorded 40 points to lead Honduras while Richard Smith topped the losers with 33 points. The Hondurans had a 7-2 margin in service winners while the Costa Ricans held a 16-13 advantage in the blocking category.

The men’s bronze went to Panama following a 3-1 (17-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-23) victory over Guatemala. Domingo Avila and Donaldo Ureña contributed to the victory by each registering 22 points.

Costa Rica claimed the women’s gold medal by defeating Guatemala 3-1 (28-26, 23-25, 25-22, 25-8) to collect their seventh gold medal in the history of the Games. MVP Verania Willis and Karen Cope scored 20 and 18 points for the winners.

Nicaragua won the bronze after beating El Salvador in straight sets (25-13, 25-18, 25-15). Heidy Traña topped the winners with 15 points.
