Frankfurt, Germany, March 4, 2013 – Over 10,000 spectators were on hand to witness Generali Haching and Schweriner SC take away the coveted German Volleyball Cup in the men’s and women’s competition, respectively.
In an exciting men’s competition final, Generali Haching beat Moerser SC 3-2 (25-19, 23-25, 18-25, 25-22, 15-10) to clinch the title for the fourth time. “At the end we won with our team spirit. We have shown more emotions. I am happy that we could win this fight. I think we deserved it,” said Simon Hirsch of Generali Haching after the presentation ceremony.
In a successful title defense after their win last year, Schweriner SC won the top prize for a fifth time after a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-17) victory against Wiesbaden. “It couldn't have been any better for us,” said libero Lisa Thomsen. “We had trouble in the first two sets. In the third set we could fortunately make it a little clearer,” she said.
The fantastic level of volleyball on display for the spectators only fed the electric atmosphere at the stadium. As Denise Hanke, team captain of Schwerin SC, said after the match, “We have terrific volleyball fans.”
The matches received a great deal of media interest with ARD and ZDF – two of Germany’s largest television stations – broadcasting the event from Halle Westphalia.
