Favourites pull ahead of competition at the African Nations Championship

Tunis, Tunisia, March 2, 2013 - Hosts and defending champions Tunisia, as well as Egypt, Rwanda and Morocco have secured victories on the opening day of the Men's Junior African Nations Championship held at Sidi Boussaid Hall in Tunis. Tunisia pulled off an easy straight sets victory over Sierra Leone (25-11, 25-5, 25-14) in pool A, while Rwanda flew past Congo Brazzaville 3-1 (25-16, 25-16, 22-25, 25-15) in the best of the opening day matches. In pool B, Egypt – last year’s runner up – secured victory over RD Congo 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-13) while Morocco thwarted South Africa’s attempts to win 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-23)
The opening ceremony was attended by CAVB president Dr Amr Elwani, CAVB vice-president and Local Organising Committee president Munir Benslimane in addition to the Control Committee members. The African Nation’s Championship is a qualifying event for the FIVB Men's Junior World Championship to be held in Turkey later this year. The top four teams in Tunis are guaranteed a ticket to the World Championships in Turkey. The championship will end on March 9.
